Pollution levels in Yamuna have nearly doubled in the past eight years. The biological oxygen demand (BOD) in Palla village remained within the prescribed limit as the Yamuna River entered Delhi. The BOD load at Okhla Barrage was 32 in 2014, which increased to 56 in 2023, while the BOD level at Palla remained unchanged. The truth came out in the presentation of DPCC, Environment Department and Board of Governors of Delhi Jal at the high level committee meeting chaired by the LG of Delhi.

Pollution in Yamuna is increasing year by year. After 2014, in the year 2019, due to the repair of the Yamuna canal, four times more water was released into the Yamuna from the Hathini Kund barrage in Haryana. This allowed most of the pollutants to flow out. It was revealed at the meeting that the Aam Aadmi Party government had completely failed to stop the pollution. Despite repeated directions from the Supreme Court and the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the Delhi government has failed to stop the pollution caused by the Najafgarh drain. The BOD amount had increased from 26 in 2014 to 52 in 2017 after the Najafgarh Nala entered the Yamuna just after the ISBT.
