The Delhi government has appealed to the Supreme Court against the NGT’s order to appoint Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena as the Chairman of the High Level Committee (HLC) on Yamuna amid the ongoing dispute between the center and the government of the Aam Aadmi Party.

The apex court petition has sought an order to quash the NGT warrant. Citing a recent apex court ruling, the petition said the NGT’s orders cannot have the effect of conferring executive powers on the authority, which cannot be conferred under the constitutional system. Therefore, this order should be suspended.

• Noting that the work for the rejuvenation of the Yamuna River remained unfinished, the NGT established a high-level committee and requested the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi to head the committee.
